How cultivating Joy can change the World

Proverbs 11:17 says that “Those who are kind reward themselves, but the cruel do themselves harm.”

I sometimes see more value in actions that are difficult for me and less value when those actions are simple or even joyful. As though I need to somehow labor or fight in order for my actions to have meaning. Often while pondering how to have a positive attitude or cultivate joy in my own life I feel selfish when I realize the reward I feel in the actions I am taking. Can you relate to that at all?

I am not in any way trying to assert that difficult work is not needed and important actions will always be easy. Life is full of tough times and great things can come from this effort. I am suggesting that the gift of simplicity; being kind, generous and merciful is not just a favor to others; it enriches us and strengthens the soul of the person showing kindness. I read a study recently that shows we can rewire our brain through positive thought and actions. When you give or receive kindness your body releases dopamine and serotonin. Isn’t it incredible that God designed His people this way? I am in awe of the grace and goodness He inspires in us and how easy He makes it for us to share this grace and goodness with others. This week I invite you to find acts of kindness for others and instead of ignoring how good this feels inside of you, instead relish the gift of God’s reward.
