January Council Minutes

  • The ELCA check for the South Campus will probably be arriving as a lump sum amount in January.

  • $132.09 from Social Concerns from the sale of Advent light bulbs will be transferred to the Property Committee to purchase LED lights for the church.

  • The $37.79 balance in the Anniversary Recognition Fund will be transferred to the Hymnal Fund.

  • Pastor Dave has compiled a job description for a Youth and Christian Ed director. Once approval for the job description is given by our lay leaders working in this area, the hiring process will begin. One criteria candidates must meet is that they have completed a “certified, recognizable” youth training. A background check will also be done. He hopes to have someone in that position by the end of February.

  • Pastor Pamela reported that progress is slowly being made on the South Campus. The first service was held on the fourth Sunday of Advent, with 17 worshippers. She is meeting with community leaders such as the mayor, fire chief, police chief, etc. to find out what is going on in South Lyon. She would also like to create a network with area churches for emergency pastors and pastors to meet the needs of the community leaders. She is interested in a piece of property that contains an office building and four Quonset huts, one of which is ready to move into. The parcel could also be split into two pieces. She already has a name in mind for the South Campus - hoMe, in reference to Matthew 28. After a place of worship has been established she would like to create a blog on the internet. She will soon need secretarial and lay leader help.

  • Social Concerns is planning a “Think Spring” party for early April, which will include euchre, bingo, other board games and a chili cook-off. They are also planning a time of fellowship to bid farewell to Dale & Jean Wight.

  • 26 kids attended the Youth Quake.

  • Property’s job list continues to grow with requests from council to hang a clock in the narthex, provide better signage for the restrooms, spruce up the path to the parish house, replace the lights on the path, clear out overgrowth of weeds on the parish house parking lot, clear out boxes at the parish house, and clean out the supply room.

  • A motion was made by Tom Wackerman and seconded by Pastor Dave to approve the transfer of Pam & Steve Stapula to Calvary Lutheran, Clarkston. Motion carried.

  • A motion was made by Pastor Dave and seconded by Carol Hinkle to release Don Lewandowski from the rolls. Motion carried.

  • A motion was made by Tom Wackerman and seconded by Mim Zurn to support the preschool and WAMO for grant application from the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Foundation. Motion carried.

  • Meeting times for Congregational meetings need to be readdressed so the South Campus is not excluded.

  • A membership recognition /“meet & greet” for South Campus members will be held Sunday February 3.

  • Rick is looking for more people for the Property Committee.

  • Christian Ed will be tackling the issue of transporting kids from the South Campus to participate in activities.
  • Social Concerns will be posting flyers inviting people from the community to participate in the Lenten potlucks and services. They are also applying for a grant to purchase a defibrillator for the church.

  • A suggestion was made to reinstate some sort of a “buddy” system to provide a connection for new members.

  • The Tidy Team is in need of more help. They would like to have two teams of six people, in addition to the cleaning service. Don Papp and Bill Martin will devise a plan to get routine jobs done on a regular basis.

Respectfully Submitted,
Becky Manross,
Council Secretary
