Unique Ministries

South Lyon Power and Light                                          Leader:  Pastor Pamela Hansen

This newest ministry of All Saints is focused on bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to those who are not connected with a church home of any kind.  As Jesus said to his disciples, in Acts 1:8:, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Those who have never been involved in a church are unlikely to attend a worship service in a church building and would be lost in a traditional Lutheran setting.  Christ’s command compels us to reach out to this segment of our community, but doing so requires creative thinking and different sorts of activities, facilities, and events, like the ongoing “random acts of kindness” (ask Pastor Pamela about these!).

7 Guiding Principles:

1.   God is love, Jesus is the Savior, the Holy Spirit is our guide!

2.  Love frees and changes people.

3.  Everyone is welcome:  God loves you, so do we!

4.  Everybody has something to offer!

5.  The world needs what we have!

6.  God loves everyone and everybody needs to know!

7.  We are ONE body!

Little Saints Christian Preschool

Contact:  Theresa Kull, Preschool Director

Phone:  810.746.0238

Email:  preschool@myallsaints.com

Website:  www.myallsaints.com

Hours:  Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Little Saints Christian Preschool is a child enrichment ministry of All Saints Lutheran Church.  We are dedicated to serving our community, supporting parents, and above all providing Christian nurture and care for children.  This is accomplished through programs emphasizing the development of a positive self concept, basic physical, intellectual and social skills, responsible attitudes and an awareness of God’s love through Christ.

Preschool begins at 9:10 AM and ends with pick up, which starts at 12:30 PM.  A lunch bunch/extended care program lasting until 3:00 PM is available daily (at additional cost).   The annual calendar considers both Huron Valley and Hartland Consolidated School schedules with a few changes to meet church specific needs.  In addition to religion and academic curriculums, Little Saints includes dance classes, science labs, and Kindermusik learning experiences.  Contact Theresa Kull to explore this exploding ministry.

Stephen Ministers

Leaders: Kathy Eklov, Louise Holtz, or Lou Prine

Stephen Ministry is our congregation’s one-to-one care giving ministry.  God works through Stephen Ministers to plant a seed of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of some crisis or tragedy.

Please contact the leaders either to become a trained minister or to reach out for the care of such a person.  You can also reach out to pastors or church staff.

Office Volunteers

Coordinator:  Karen Parrish or Karen@myallsaints.com

Current hours:  T & Th 9-3

Office volunteers help in various ways during office hours including:  answering and making phone calls, assisting with bulletin preparation for worship services, occasional folding, copying, mailing projects, and other basic office tasks.

There are also specific projects where a volunteer may be needed for data entry, spreadsheet maintenance, etc.  This is an invaluable way to support your church staff and your church family.

Tidy Teams

Leader:  contact Kevin Keller, 248-933-3973 or kkrew10@yahoo.com

What are they?  Teams of six or more people gather on a Tuesday or whenever team leader is able to get a time that a Team of at least six people can get together to clean.

What is the purpose?  Clean All Saints Lutheran Church.

What is the time commitment?  It should be about two hours with at least six people.

The TIDY TEAMS will be rotated.  We are striving to have at least six teams of six.

FAQ:  Can I choose what to clean?  Yes, you may but the TIDY TEAM needs to follow the “tidy list” of things to do.  The important thing to remember is:  "If it needs to be done, let's do it."  Could I just be a substitute?  Yes, you may.  You’ll be on call just in case a TIDY TEAM member can’t make it.

Why Tuesday and Saturday?  We need to do a thorough cleaning of the church.   It is in our best interest to keep the church clean.  It also is a substantial savings on our budget.

We clean the church on Tuesdays, beginning at 9am.  We’d like to have a Saturday Tidy Team, too.  If you can’t make it on either day, then maybe the next time that you are at All Saints Lutheran Church and you see a cleaning thing to do just step right up and do it and know that you have helped to keep God’s church clean.

Why not come on a Tuesday morning and join the Team to see what it is all about?  We’ll even have a break or two for coffee and munchies.  It really is FUN to clean the church with other members of the Tidy Team.

Creative Saints in Fellowship

Do you enjoy the fellowship of All Saints Christian women? Do you like doing some easy crafts, especially when you can chat with church friends?  Creative Saints in Fellowship is a daytime group meeting on the first Monday of the month, from 1-3 p.m.

Some of our outreach projects have been making everything from blankets for the neonatal department at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital to quilts and making special cards for our parishioners. No special talent is needed or required. However, we would surely enjoy your company, so come and join this loose-knit group.

Questions? Call Chair Louise Holtz (248-889-3040) or

Co-Chair Susan Happel (248-887-5489).

Vacation Bible School

Christian Education Liaison: OPEN

Traditionally, VBS at All Saints is held during the week that bridges July to August, or the last week of July.   In the past we have welcomed approximately 100 youth during our VBS program.  Children who are entering preschool through the 6th grade are invited to participate, although we also welcome older youth to serve as leaders and assistants throughout our program.

The Vacation Bible School program varies from year to year, but always features daily Bible stories, activities and music.  We have also traditionally incorporated some sort of mission project as well.  Efforts have included stocking the All Saints food pantry to help those in our community who may need a helping hand and encouraging VBS participants to bring in paper for recycling as a means of being good stewards of the earth.

WAMO (Worship and Music Operations)

Meeting Day: currently Saturdays
Meeting Time: contact leader for more information
Leader: Maria Spencer

WAMO oversees worship planning, worship assistants, musicians, worship
leaders and altar guild, in short, all areas of and participants in worship
leadership.  At our monthly meetings we deal with problems, blessings,
changes and issues within these groups and in all elements of worship at
ASLC. We try to stay abreast of current thoughts regarding all styles of
worship and open to new directions in which God would like to lead
us. Meetings are informal and are open to all with ideas to share about
worship.

Worship Planning For Morning Worship

Meeting Day: TBD
Meeting Time: TBD
Leaders: Julie Markwart, Kathleen Waligura

The worship planners meet 3-4 times a year and plan God-centered liturgical
worship well in advance of calendar dates.  They usually meet on a Saturday
morning either at AS or the house of a member, each team member having done
a fair amount of preparatory "homework". We work well into the day and try
to incorporate some snacks and fun as well as hard work. If you have ideas
and thoughts about hymn and liturgical setting selection contact one of us
so you will be notified about our next planning marathon.

AM Worship Team

Time:  6:30 PM

Serving: Every Sunday at 11:00 AM service

Leader: Greg Zywicki

The AM Worship Team is an instrumental group that helps lead worship and support congregational singing during worship by playing instrumental parts on both the liturgy and hymns. We also do special events or projects, such as CD recordings and E.L.C.A. Synod events.

Liturgical Choirs

Meeting Day/Time: Tuesday @ 7:00 p.m. and one hour before Sunday morning service

Leader: open - 8:30 AM service liturgical choir

Julie Markwart - 11:00 AM service liturgical choir

The 8:30 AM Liturgical Choir is open to anyone high school age and above who has an interest in supporting the congregation’s singing. The practice time is at 7:30 AM every Sunday morning. We meet to practice the appointed psalm and the hymns of the day. Vocalists and instrumentalists are encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact Lori Jahn.

The purpose of the 11:00 AM Liturgical Choir is to serve the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service by providing leadership and encouragement to the congregation in singing the psalms, liturgy, hymns, and prayers of worship. The cantor for the day is a part of this group, sometimes singing the verses for the psalm as well as the Kyrie. There is opportunity to sing harmony as well as unison, develop skills as a cantor, and share your love of singing. Weekday practices are used to learn new hymns and liturgies to introduce to the congregation and also to rehearse harmonies and psalms. Please come!

Special Music Ministry

All Saints welcomes all those who have a desire to share their God-given
musical gifts with our parishioners to do so during worship.  This sharing
can be done as offertory music, music during the communion, prelude or
postlude music, or perhaps at a seasonal special event. Instrumental or
vocal soloists or small groups are equally welcomed and appreciated. No
particular level of skill is required; a passion for bringing glory to God
through music is.

Chancel Choir

Rehearsals: Watch the Herald and Announcements for details

Serving: Varies

If you love to sing, join this choir each week. Singers of all skill and experience are welcome. The Chancel Choir performs at occasional worship services throughout the year.
Assisting Ministers

Meeting Day: As needed.

Leader: Office

The Assistant Minister group consists of volunteers who help lead the congregation during worship. Assistant Ministers lead in liturgy, serve communion and read lessons.

Training for the group is offered throughout the year on an “as needed” basis. Members are encouraged to attend the leader’s workshops as well. For information on joining this group please see Brian Baughman or someone in the church office. All are encouraged to join and all are welcome. This is a wonderful and spiritual way to serve the Lord.

Lectors

Meeting Day: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader: Becky Manross

Our ministry is to bring the Word of God to life during Sunday worship. We feel that the Word is not only relevant to our walk with Christ in the modern world, but provides compelling and colorful illustrations of the daily struggle people have faced since before the time of Christ. Our hope is that we can present the stories of the Bible in a way that overcomes the Monday Syndrome.

Worship Coordinator, part of the Welcome Team

Meeting Day: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled on Sundays

Overall Leader: Office

Team Leader:  Worship Coordinator that rotates from week to week, and team by team

The Worship Coordinator is the person who oversees the needs of the worship service by checking in with each ministry to be certain all is ready for worship and try to find replacements for missing participants.

Ushers, part of the  Welcome Team

Meeting Day: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Overall Leader: Office

Team Leader:  Worship Coordinator that rotates from week to week, and team by team

The Ushers are four members of the team that will prepare the worship space for service, help worshippers find seating, assist with taking the offering, present the elements for Communion, and work with the greeters in identifying guests and help make the worship experience a meaningful one for all. This is an extremely important ministry critically involved in the smooth running of our services as well as helping our visitors feel comfortable and welcome.

Greeters, part of the  Welcome Team

Meeting Day: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Overall Leader: Office

Team Leader:  Worship Coordinator that rotates from week to week, and team by team

This is an integral part to welcoming ALL into their worship experience.  Greeters serve to welcome and direct those joining us as we gather as the body of Christ.

Communion Assistants

Meeting Day: As needed

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader: Sonja Markwart

The communion assistants play a vital role at every service held at All Saints. They help the pastors, assisting minister and acolyte with the distribution of communion. Being a part of the communion assistant team is a rewarding experience. If you are interested in serving with us, please contact the church office. Volunteers will be asked to serve once every couple months.

Acolyte Team

Meetings Times: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leaders: Office

Acolytes have the honor of leading the congregation in worship as they perform several important tasks. They bring the symbol of Christ’s presence into the sanctuary as they light the candles, they assist in receiving the gifts which are brought forward after the offering, they help with distributing Holy Communion to the congregation, they serve communion to the pastor and the assisting minister, and most important of all they lead the congregation by example. As they sit in the front of the worship space, with the pastors and the lay assisting minister, their attitude and participation in worship helps those who are watching focus on God and the real reasons we gather together for worship in the first place. It is a great responsibility, but an even greater honor to serve God in this way.

Nursery Team

Meetings: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader: WAMO

Please consider spending time with our youngest members so their families can spend time reflecting, concentrating, and/or serving during worship. This can make the difference between worship being the positive experience of meeting with God that it is supposed to be, or a stressful event to be avoided. We are now providing a volunteer-staffed nursery at the 11:00 service. A cry room with an audio/video link is available at both the 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM services.

Children’s Message

Meeting Times: As needed

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader:

Develop and present an age appropriate version of the Message during both morning services.

Children’s Church

Meeting Times: As needed

Commitment:  Both morning services about 3 times per year

Leader:

Sound Techs

Meeting Times: As needed.

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader: contact office

A group of people who have agreed to commit their time and expertise to making certain that the congregation’s worship experience is always enhanced by clear, intelligible sound. Music clearly heard, speaking clearly understood, is always the goal. No previous experience with sound equipment is required, but a willingness to learn and to serve God “behind the scenes” is a must. If you would like to help out in this critical area of ministry call the church office.

PowerPoint Operators

Commitment:  as scheduled

Leader: contact office

Meeting Time: Look for posted dates and times

Leader: Nancy Yount

We prepare communion for and clean up after all worship services (including weddings and funerals), and change paraments and banners according to the liturgical season. We wash and iron all of the altar linens, and we make new banners as well. Other duties include preparing the chancel area for worship and setting up for special events like baptisms. Families can do this together.

Krystal Bells – as interest dictates

Rehearsals:  TBA, once interest renewed

Serving:

Leader:

Krystal Bells is a music ministry for children of all ages. All Saints has 48 color-coded bells which are rung to a background tape of music. Occasionally, the children ring the bells during worship times and at special programs. This is a wonderful way to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”

Liturgical Dance

If you are interested in this group, please speak with a leader from Worship & Music.

Drama Ministry

Coordinator: Maria Spencer

Our "dramatis personae" meet on an as needed basis to provide lectionary

before presentations and all involved not only work hard but have great fun.

Communion Ministers

Contact:  Kate Zywicki

Scheduler:  Patti Nicolo

Serving: Varies

Communion Ministers take communion to shut-ins each week after worship. Communion elements and the Word are given to Communion Ministers, along with either a CD of the morning worship service or a copy of the readings for the day.  The ministers in turn take these and the spirit of the congregation with them as they visit our homebound brothers and sisters, keeping us all connected in Christ.

All Saints Mission Team

Meeting Date: Sundays depending on current planned mission project

Contact: Director of Lay Ministries, Kate Zywicki or Diana Taylor

Following from our first church wide international mission outreach project to Costa Rica in 2006, this small group meets to plan mission trips, fund raise for planned trips, provide mission to the world, and give back to All Saints as well.  Our most recent mission returned us to Costa Rica in February 2009, for a week of work, relationship building and international outreach.

Other national missions are in discussion currently but not on the calendar yet.   Ideas include trips to Indian Reservations in the West, local foci like Christmas in Action, the greater Hartland/Livingston area, and to those in need within our own congregation.  These are just the beginning of the ideas!

If you have any interest in missions, please come check this group out!!

All are welcome!

Some of the areas that we are always looking for expertise in are: insurance, bookkeeping, investing, taxes, and accounting.

The Good News Team/Evangelism

Meeting Day:

Meeting Time:

Leader: Bob Duman

The Good News Team works hard to “get the word out” to the community around us. This team is responsible for writing newspaper articles, getting church participation in parades, helping new members get connected, and a variety of other things that help us share The Good News.

Managing a Christian Lifestyle

Meeting Day:

Meeting Time:

Leader: OPEN

Previously known as just Stewardship but is really better named by Managing a Christian Lifestyle as this can be complicated in today’s world. This committee helps us manage our time, talents, and other resources to support us in our growth as followers of Jesus Christ.

Information Technology Committee

Meeting Day: As scheduled

Meeting Time: As Scheduled

Leader: Len Hammond

Under the umbrella of the Property Committee, this committee is responsible for evaluating our computer needs (hardware & software); networking issues, internet and other new technologies, and determines how best to integrate them to address our immediate and future needs.

Property Committee

Meeting Day: varies based on pending projects

Leader: Rick Mann

The objective of the Property Committee is to provide a warm, friendly environment for worship that is appealing to visitors and comfortable to members. We recognize that the church building and property are a powerful evangelistic tool if they reflect the community, care and enthusiasm of the congregation

Property activities provide an entry point for new members and those interested in becoming more active in church activities and community. Additionally, performing property tasks together builds relationships and provides an opportunity to serve God with immediate and tangible results.

Property Committee responsibilities include maintenance of the church building and surrounding facilities. Activities include: building repair, new equipment or facility installations and coordinating all maintenance from cleaning to lawn maintenance and snow removal.

The Health Ministry, directed by the Parish Nurse, will assist members of the congregation and the surrounding community with health concerns, health education, consultation, and referral to available health resources.

Easter & Thanksgiving Baskets

Date: TBA

Contact:  Carol Hinkle

Every year we assemble baskets of food donations and gift cards for needy people in our community. Talk to Social Concerns Chair Carol Hinkle to find out how you can help.

Rummage Sale

Day: TBA

Time: TBA

Leader: Mim Zurn

We sponsor an annual rummage sale and the proceeds go toward helping fill the needs in the congregation and in the community. In 2004, proceeds were distributed, along with 50% matching funds from the Livingston County Chapter of Thrivent Financial, to identified families of our congregation in extreme financial need.

Mom to Mom Sale

Day: Saturdays, typically 9-1, next scheduled is April 25th

Time: traditionally twice a year, once in fall, once in spring

Leader: Jenny Stromlund and Little Saints Christian Preschool

This is an opportunity to reach out to the community while providing an opportunity to sell and purchase gently used children’s items.  Sellers rent table space, make their items available for sale, and then keep all their proceeds.  All Saints makes the space available for a low table rental fee and charges a low shopper’s fee and usually runs a bake sale as well.  This is a great fundraising opportunity for all involved.

Angel Tree

Date: during the season of Advent

Contact:  Carol Hinkle

We come together as a church to collect gifts for children less fortunate than ourselves.  Typically we work with Boys and Girls Republic, a residential program for youth.  Find a tag of a requested item off the tree, purchase the item, and then put your wrapped and tagged item under the tree for delivery for Christmas.

Coffeehouse Ministry

Date:  TBA

All Saints hosts Coffeehouse/Open Mic nights annually.  All those with a performance to share are welcome.  This event attempts to bring in non-All Saints’ members for an evening of fun and to provide a venue for all sorts of talent.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Date: TBD as interest is shown

Contact:  Ruth Sykes

The shawl ministry was probably 50% talking and 50% knitting and crocheting shawls....each shawl as it is made was prayed on and as we would hear of a need for comfort in someone’s life (sickness, lost of a love one, divorce) they would be presented with a shawl and card informing them of the ministry and the prayers that we knitted or crochets into each stitch....though the giving of the shawl is important, the get together and fellowship was also important to those involved.

Love Day

Date: First and Third Thursdays of each month, starting at 12:30 PM

Contact:  Mim Zurn

This is a ministry that works in connection with the larger Lutheran mission to reach out and provide quilts to those in need throughout the world.  No sewing knowledge is required.  Some sewing is done, but the final “quilting” is done through hand tieing.  Very often some of those quilts are available for purchase and the proceeds go back to making more quilts or to the larger Lutheran Mission, ACTION.  ACTION is an auxiliary group of Lutheran Social Services that fund raises and provides needed materials for various missions.

Adopt-A-Road Program:

Date: as scheduled

Contact:  Bill Johnston

This is a State of Michigan sponsored program that we at ASLC have committed ourselves to do.  It started as a community outreach consideration when we moved to this site.  It has become a matter of ASLC pride.  When you drive M59 please note that the State has erected two signs.  One is on the south side of 59 near Clark St. (just east of 23).  The other is on the north side just east of Pleasant Valley Rd.  The signs declare to the community that ASLC is responsible for the cleaning of the next 3 miles of road.

The task is simple to state.  Three times a year (designated by the state to coincide with the States grass cutting) we pick up litter in our 3 miles.  In a perfect world it takes 14 volunteers.  It can be done in about one hour.  We have done it with 7 (tough).  “Many hands make the work light”.

This is in no-way for everybody.   The State rules require the minimum age to be 15 (12 if accompanied by a parent).  Volunteers must be healthy enough to walk at least a mile, bending and stooping along the way while picking up other peoples liter, while cars zoom past you at 55+ MPH.   Tiring though it may be, it is in-fact feel-good work.  Please consider joining us the next pick-up date.

Memorial Garden

Contact:  Louise Holtz

This is a project on the books.  Please see an example in the narthex of just one of the proposed ideas for the outdoor space we have available on the central west side of the building.  It is projected that this will be a space for quiet contemplation, amidst God’s beauty, with things to remind us of the Saints that have gone before us.  If you are interested, please contact the leader for updated details.
